The Section 9 girls basketball tournament brackets were released on Thursday, February 26.
The top seeds are Newburgh (Class AAA); Cornwall (Class AA); Red Hook (Class A); James I. O’Neill (Class B); S,S, Seward (Class C); and, Eldred (Class D) – the Yellowjackets are the only team in Class D and declared automatic champions.
Tournament play will begin on February 28.
The Class AAA and AA finals will be hosted by Monroe-Woodbury High School on March 7. Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh has three title games: Class A on March 6; Class B on March 5; and, Class C on March 4.
The latest New York sportswriters rankings (through Feb. 22): Class AAA – No. 13 Our Lady of Lourdes; No. 18 Kingston; No. 24 Newburgh; No. 28 Middletown; Class AA – No. 21 Cornwall; Honorable mention F.D. Roosevelt; Warwick; Class A – Honorable mention Beacon; Saugerties; Class B – No. 13 Sullivan West; No. 30 James I. O’Neill; Honorable mention Onteora; Class C – No. 21 S.S. Seward; Class D – None.
In the 2025 sectional finals, No. 3 Middletown beat No. 1 Pine Bush in AAA; No. 1 Warwick beat No. 6 Wallkill in AA; No. 3 Marlboro beat No,. 1 Beacon in A; No. 1 Tri-Valley beat No. 2 James I. O’Neill in B; No. 2 Pine Plains beat No. 1 S.S. Seward in C; and, Eldred was the lone team in D.
In the 2024 state playoffs, Middletown got a bye and lost to Section 1 champ Albertus Magnus (state champ) 65-42 in the AAA quarterfinals; Warwick got a bye, beat Section 4 champ Horseheads 40-31 in the AA quarterfinals and fell to Section 5 champ Aquinas Institute (state runner-up) 67-39 in the semifinals; Marlboro lost to Section 1 champ Ardsley (state champ) 51-20 in the B first round; Pine Plains got a bye and lost to Section 1 champ Tuckahoe (state semifinalist) 59-25 in the quarterfinals; and, Eldred got a bye and lost to Section 2 champ Northville (state runner-up) 74-21 in the quarterfinals.
