5 things to do in Amarillo area for Feb. 26-March 1 weekend

With calmer weather expected, as well as Texas Independence Day and spring around the corner, annual expos featuring reptiles, home and garden and a bridal extravaganza are on tap, as well as these other events of note.

Horror fans won’t want to miss when “Scream 7” opens in theaters Feb. 27, including Cinergy Entertainment in Amarillo, while “Jersey Boys” wraps up its run at Amarillo Little Theatre March 1.

Feb. 26: Burrowing Owl Poetry Circle gathering — Book and poetry lovers will gather for the group’s monthly meeting, to be led by Dr. Pat Tyrer, WT’s Jenny Lind Porter Professor of English, at 6 p.m. at Burrowing Owl Books, 400 15th St. in Canyon. Attendees can share their own works or those by others, or they can simply listen. For information, call 806-651-2476 or email ptyrer@wtamu.edu.

Feb. 27-28: “Romance at the Symphony” — Sit back and listen as the Amarillo Symphony performs music from “West Side Story” and “Gone with the Wind,” John Williams’ Cello Concerto with Oliver Herbert, and Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture at these live concerts at 7:30 p.m. at the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts. Sarah Beckham-Turner will also sing opera favorites. Tickets start at $27; call (806) 376-8782 or visit the Amarillo Symphony office.

Feb. 27: Mixology: Science on the Rocks at the Don Harrington Discovery Center — For the 21-and-older crowd, the Discovery Center is putting a twist on its annual AfterDark event on beer. Enjoy games, activities (including bullriding, food, craft beer, local liquor distillers, science, and fun at 7-10 p.m. while learning about the science behind beer brewing and liquor distillation with DHDC’s partner vendors. Attendees can also visit the “Dinosaurs” exhibit. Tickets are $50, or $45 for DHDC members, with a $85 couples’ deal and include access to all activities, an open bar, samples from local vendors, and food. IDs will be checked at the door. Feb. 28-March 1: Lone Star Reptile Expo, Amarillo Civic Center Complex — Animal lovers won’t want to miss this annual show featuring snakes, frogs, toads, turtles, lizards, insects, mice, rats, and more, with dozens of vendors on site. They’ll also have supplies, feeders, information and other amenities to peruse in the civic center’s exhibit hall at 401 S Buchanan St., during open hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $10, or $5 for children. Those age 6 and younger get in free. The expo is scheduled to revisit Amarillo in October.

March 1: The Bridal Show of Amarillo at Amarillo Civic Center — From noon to 4 p.m. in the center’s Heritage Ballroom, friends, families and brides-to-be can browse and plan their special days while meeting face-to-face with wedding professionals, from cakes and catering to apparel, venues, event planning and more.
