Legendary Iowa high school baseball coach Gene Schultz died on Monday, Feb. 23, according to a statement from the Eastern Allamakee Community School District.
Schultz is the winningest coach in Iowa baseball history, having amassed a career record of 1,754-398 over his 45 years leading the Kee High School program in Lansing.
Schultz also won the most state titles (11, nine summer and two fall) and made the most state tournament appearances (19) of any coach in state history, according to the IHSAA record book. He retired from coaching in 2014.
“For more than four decades, Coach Schultz dedicated his life to the students of Kee High and to the game he loved,” the Eastern Allamakee Community School District’s statement said, in part. “His impact reached far beyond the playing field and classroom walls. Known not only throughout our local community, but across the state and nationally, Coach Schultz built a legacy defined by integrity, leadership, humility and an unwavering commitment to young people. “
Schultz’s death came less than a month after legendary Decorah baseball coach Dennis Olejniczak, the second-winningest coach in Iowa high school history (1,417-560-2), died on Jan. 24.
