Milwaukee bar giving free brats, beer today for Fred Usinger Day

Milwaukeeans can get a free bratwurst Monday, Feb. 23, in celebration of Milwaukee’s most famous sausage-maker.

The Old German Beer Hall, 1009 N. King Drive, is handing out free Usinger’s bratwursts from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in celebration of Fred Usinger Day.

It’s the 19th year the business has done so, according to Old German Beer Hall. This year, guests can get a custom-recipe smoked bratwurst made with Hofbräu Dunkel Lager beer and applewood smoked bacon.

Free brats are one per person, while supplies last.

Live music is scheduled all afternoon and into the evening: From 1 to 4 p.m. by The Biermen, and from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. by the Ryan Krautzer Band. At 6 p.m., Fredrick “Fritz” Usinger IV, Usinger’s great-grandson and president of Usinger’s, will tap a keg of Hofbräu Munich beer, and those in attendance can have a free sample of the beer, while supplies last.

Feb. 23 was first proclaimed Fred Usinger Day in 2005 by then-Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, in celebration of the sausage-maker’s legacy in the city.
