Michigan gas prices remain below $3, AAA says

Michigan gas prices continue to trend below $3 per gallon, AAA – The Auto Group announced Monday.

The price, at $2.85 per gallon of regular unleaded, is 4 cents less than a month ago and 24 cents below the same time in 2025, officials said.

Motorists in the state are paying an average of $42 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline, AAA reported.

The EIA reports crude oil inventories declined by 9 million barrels since last week, according to a release from AAA. At 419.8 million barrels, U.S. crude oil inventories are about 5% below the five-year average for late February.

“Average gasoline prices continue to drift higher as crude oil trades near its highest level since last summer, driven by mounting geopolitical risk premiums tied to escalating tensions between the United States and Iran,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

“While there has been no direct disruption to energy infrastructure, markets are increasingly pricing in the possibility of a broader exchange that could threaten supply flows. Beyond geopolitics, we’re also seeing localized supply constraints, including refinery outages and disruptions along the Olympic Pipeline, which have amplified price pressures in the Pacific Northwest. These developments are unlikely to be isolated, as planned refinery maintenance is set to intensify in the weeks ahead. As seasonal supply tightens, the national average is increasingly likely to retest the $3-per-gallon threshold.”

AAA reports the national pump price is at $2.94.

GasBuddy says the national average price of gasoline is $2.88.

That price rose by a penny since last week and is two dimes lower than this time in 2025, according to data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering some 150,000 gas stations across the country for GasBuddy.

The national average price of diesel climbed 6 cents compared to a week ago and stands at $3.67 per gallon.

Average gasoline prices in Detroit dropped 7 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $2.89 Monday, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 1,734 stations.

Prices in Detroit are a penny higher than last month and stand 18 cents per gallon lower than a year ago.

The consumer gas company reported Sunday the cheapest gas station in Detroit and lowest in the state was priced at $2.37. The most expensive price in the city and the highest price in the state was $3.39.

Metro Detroit’s current average is $2.92 per gallon. That’s about 7 cents less than last week and 20 cents under than the same time a year ago.

The most expensive gas price averages are in Ann Arbor ($2.98), Metro Detroit ($2.92) and Jackson ($2.83).

The least expensive are in Traverse City ($2.61), Grand Rapids ($2.74) and Saginaw ($2.75).

“Drivers across Michigan are seeing lower pump prices to start the week,” said Adrienne Woodland, AAA’s spokesperson, in a release. “If gasoline supply continues to decrease, alongside rising demand, pump prices could possibly reverse course.”
