HGTV star Nicole Curtis’ team responded to The Detroit News’ request for comment after her use of a racial slur while filming. The full statement follows:

“Nicole Curtis is at home with her family this evening, but very much wanted to speak directly to her beloved Detroit friends and community regarding the video circulating online.

“Nicole is deeply saddened by the hurt her words have caused. She takes full responsibility for their impact, regardless of context. What occurred was a clear slip of the tongue — a mistaken version of one of her well-known expressions — spoken after 17 hours of physically demanding work and very little sleep. Even so, she understands that intent does not erase impact, and she is truly sorry.

“The video exists, however, the clip has been edited in a way that does not reflect the full moment of remorse and shock in the moment. Her team is actively working to locate the original, unedited footage and plans to share it publicly so the situation can be understood in its entirety.

“Detroit is not a backdrop or a set to Nicole — it is her home. She has been part of this community her entire life and is proud to represent it on television and beyond. Her heart is rooted in her family, her neighbors, and the projects she has devoted herself to here. Bringing her show back to Detroit was her way of celebrating the city and the people she loves. She sees herself not as a television personality, but as a mother raising her children in the community that has embraced her.

“She wants to say this plainly: what was said was wrong. Nicole is known by those close to her and on TV for using playful, harmless phrases like “son of a cow digger” and “fart nugget” to make her children laugh when she stubs her toe or has a frustrating moment. This incident was an unfortunate verbal mistake of one of those sayings under immense exhaustion, and her regret was immediate. She is sincerely sorry for the pain it caused.

“A more formal statement will follow. In the meantime, Nicole is grateful to those from the community who have reached out with support and understanding.”
