Crash in Somis with Amtrak leaves man dead, authorities investigate

A fatal crash between a train and a male pedestrian happened in the area of Sand Canyon Road and Los Angeles Avenue in Somis around 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 7, according to authorities.

Venutra County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to calls that came in around 8:25 p.m. on a fatal incident involving a male pedestrian around 25 years old being hit by an Amtrak train near Los Angeles Avenue in Somis, Sgt. Christopher Zapata said. The sheriff’s office provides police services for the area of Somis.

An investigation of this incident by the sheriff’s office major crimes unit is underway and the unit is working with the Medical Examiner’s Office to narrow down the cause of the death, Zapata said.

Ventura County Fire Department also received a call on the incident around 8:29 p.m. in the area of Sand Canyon Road and Los Angeles Avenue, said Andrew Dowd, the department’s spokesperson.

Fire personnel arrived and pronounced the pedestrian in the crash dead at the scene, Dowd said.

No other information was available from the sheriff’s office or the fire department.

The Amtrak train scheduled to be running at the time of the incident was a southbound Pacific Surfliner, according to Amtrak’s website.

Amtrak was not immediately available to comment on the incident.
