45 cited as deputies go off-road at massive OHV gathering in Apple Valley

Sheriff’s deputies issued dozens of tickets during an enforcement and educational campaign amid a recent massive off-road vehicle gathering in Apple Valley.

Members of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Off-Highway Vehicle Team rode out on dirt bikes and ATVs of their own to keep watch over the massive motorized meet-up, which drew more than 250 vehicles to the Juniper Flats OHV Area in Apple Valley on Saturday, Jan. 24, according to the agency.

The “large-scale OHV education and enforcement operation” sought to remind off-roaders to “ride smart, ride safe, and have fun,” sheriff’s officials said in a written statement.

“During the operation deputies contacted about 900 people and provided educational and off-roading safety and guidance information to many off-road enthusiasts,” the statement said. “About 50 traffic stops were conducted on off road vehicles for various violations including: not wearing helmets, not wearing seatbelts, registration violations, and driving an OHV on a public roadway.”

By the end of the operation, deputies had written 45 tickets and towed seven off-road vehicles, officials said.

One person was arrested for driving without a license, and another was arrested due to an outstanding felony warrant out of Los Angeles County.

“The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and the OHV Team would like to remind off-road enthusiasts to be familiar with legal riding areas, off-roading laws and requirements and, most importantly, to enjoy our public lands safely and responsibly,” according to the statement.

Deputies from several are sheriff’s stations, along with the Sheriff’s Transit Operations Division and San Bernardino County Code Enforcement, took part in the campaign.
