After plans were presented during a “town-hall type meeting” concerning the newly acquired state park on Holiday Isle, Destin is looking to make sure the city has a say in the future of the four acres.
On Feb. 2, the Destin City Council approved a proposed interlocal agreement that would “recognize collaboration between the City and County for future development” of the parcel in the event the county obtains a legal interest in the state park, such as a lease from the state.
The parcel sits adjacent to the city-owned Norriego Point Park on Holiday Isle.
Destin City Attorney Kimberly Kopp said she thinks no lease agreement has been entered into by the county and the state at this time.
In the meantime, the city has drawn up a proposed interlocal agreement that Mayor Bobby Wagner will present at the Feb. 17 Okaloosa County Commission meeting.
Council member Kevin Schmidt asked whether the mayor was on the County Commission agenda for Feb. 17. As of Feb. 2, he had not been confirmed.
However, Wagner assured the council he is going regardless. And if not on the agenda, he can speak during the public comment period.
“This will give them something to deliberate on,” Wagner said, concerning the proposal.
Some of the points of the proposal that Kopp pointed out during the Feb. 2 meeting were:
Council member Dewey Destin made the motion to direct the mayor to propose the interlocal agreement at the commission meeting.
“It is a proposed interlocal,” Destin reminded everyone. “They may have changes … and we will address them as we get to them.”
The motion passed unanimously.
The mayor, along with Kopp and Destin City Manager Larry Jones, will attend the County Commission meeting on Feb. 17.
