Former UCLA quarterback sues for 2026 season eligibility

On Monday, former UCLA Bruins football quarterback Joey Aguilar became the latest college football player to file a lawsuit against the NCAA for eligibility.

The 2025 Tennessee quarterback was redshirted on the City College of San Francisco for 2019 before his 2020 was canceled, due to COVID. Aguilar then played two years for Diablo Valley before he played for Appalachian State in 2023. He had agreed to transfer to the Bruins for the 2025 season, but changed to Tennessee after UCLA acquired redshirt sophomore quarterback Nico Iamaleava.

Now Aguilar hopes to extend his time in college by arguing that his time in JUCO should not count towards his Division I collegiate years of eligibility. Here is some of College Sports Wire’s Tyler Nettuno wrote about Aguilar’s lawsuit.

“Aguilar was originally a co-plaintiff in Diego Pavia’s lawsuit against the NCAA, challenging the idea that JUCO seasons should count toward an athlete’s eligibility. However, he recently removed himself from that lawsuit and filed his own in hopes of receiving a quicker ruling.”

If Aguilar’s collegiate career does come to an end after his 2025 performance, the could have been Bruin had a 62.4 completion percentage for 10,325 passing yards with 80 touchdowns and 34 interceptions.
