Last offseason, the Chicago Bears wasted no time in identifying Ben Johnson as their top target to fill their head coaching vacancy and moved quickly to hire him, pairing him with quarterback Caleb Williams.
In their first season together, Williams and Johnson revived not only the Bears franchise but the city of Chicago, which had Soldier Field rocking throughout the entire season and the two playoff games they hosted before coming up short in the NFC divisional round.
While the magical season came to an early end, the Bears have several building blocks to build around, none more important than Williams who certainly cemented himself as the franchise cornerstone in Chicago. Meeting with the media for his end of season press conference on Wednesday, Johnson sang the praises of Williams, saying he’s going to be a special player for a long time.
“We made a number of strides, Ryan did a phenomenal job acquiring talent on the offensive side of the ball,” Johnson said. “Up front this offensive line, we got something to really build upon there, we’ve got weapons on the perimeter, our quarterback is going to be a special player in this league, and our running game picked up. With that being said, we did a number of really good things on offense, and yet we haven’t even scratched the surface of what we’re fully capable of yet.”
There’s plenty of reason to be excited for not only the entire future of the Bears, but specifically the offense as Johnson continues to work and grow his chemistry with Williams. Labeling him as a special player in the league speaks volumes of the talent level Johnson sees in his quarterback, it’ll just be a matter of time to see if all comes to fruition.
