Barberton woman, 72, struck and killed in church parking lot identified

A 72-year-old Barberton woman was struck and killed by a vehicle Sunday, Jan. 11 in the parking lot of St. Francis de Sales Church in Coventry Township, according to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called to the church shortly after noon after learning of reports that a pedestrian had been hit by a vehicle. When they arrived, they found the woman, identified by the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office as Maria Murawski, suffering from what were described as serious injuries.

Investigators said the woman was walking in the church parking lot when she was struck by a 2017 Buick SUV being driven by a 90-year-old woman.

The victim was transported by Coventry Fire to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The crash remains under investigation by the Summit Metro Crash Response Team. Possible charges are pending the outcome of that investigation.

The fatal accident is the second tragedy to happen on parish property in recent years.

In 2017, a 5-year-old boy from Green was struck and killed when he crossed in front of his mother’s vehicle outside St. Francis de Sales School.
