Strong winds across Stark County bring fallen trees, power outages

More than 750 customers were without power in the southeastern Hartville and southeastern Lake Township areas as of 4:30 p.m. Dec. 29, according to First Energy.

Wind gusts reached nearly 50 miles per hour, knocking down trees, as an Arctic front moved through the Great Lakes area.

By 5:30 p.m., that number of customers with a power outage was down to around 700 customers.

A National Weather Service high-wind advisory remains in effect in Stark County and much of northeast Ohio through 1 a.m. Dec. 30.

The advisory warned that the winds would blow around unsecured objects and could make driving difficult for high-profile vehicles.

At 10:51 a.m. at Akron-Canton Airport, winds were measured at 31 miles per hour with gusts of 44 miles per hour.

A tree fell on a house in the 2000 block of 28th Street NE in Plain Township sometime before 1:57 p.m., a dispatcher said. The house was damaged but no one was in the home at the time.

The Stark County Sheriff’s dispatch said it received reports of damage to internet cable lines but none to power lines.

Jackson Township Fire responded to two incidents of trees bringing down power lines prior to noon, said Battalion Chief Seth Rieger.

Shortly before 10:56 a.m., a tree fell on power lines, blocking East Boulevard by Lake Cable at Villa Padova Drive NW, Rieger said. The township’s road department blocked off the road for at least a few hours so AEP utility workers could clear the debris and repair the power lines.

A tree shortly before 11:14 a.m. fell on power lines in backyard of a home in the 1900 block of Glenmont Drive NW, between Dunkeith and Duncannon Avenue NW near the village of Hills and Dales. There was no fire that resulted.
