President Donald Trump added two new federal holidays to 2025, including today, the day after Christmas.
Trump signed an executive order on Dec. 18 that closed most federal offices on Christmas Eve and Friday, Dec. 26, and while the days are considered federal holidays in 2025, the pair are not a permanent addition to the holiday schedule.
To designate a day as a federal holiday in perpetuity, legislation must pass through Congress and be signed into law by the president. This was last done when Juneteenth was added in 2021 under the Biden administration, according to USA TODAY.
While federal government offices may close their doors the days before and after Christmas this year, here’s what to know about what’s open and closed.
Is today a federal holiday?
Yes, Trump signed an executive order designating Friday, Dec. 26 a federal holiday in 2025.
Who gets the day off on Dec. 26?
While the order gives federal workers the day off, there are exceptions. Federal heads of executive departments and agencies “may determine that certain offices and installations of their organizations, or parts thereof, must remain open and that certain employees must report for duty.”
Reasons offices would need to stay open include for national security, defense, or other public need, the order said.
Is the post office open today? Is there mail delivery today?
U.S. Postal Service post offices will be open for retail transactions on Friday, Dec. 26 and mail will be delivered.
Are banks open today?
According to the Federal Reserve, banks will follow the typical schedule of being open for business on Friday, Dec. 26.
Is the stock market open today?
Yes, the New York Stock Exchange will reopen for core trading on Friday, Dec. 26 after being closed for Christmas.
Is Wells Fargo open today?
Wells Fargo will reopen for normal hours on Friday, Dec. 26, a company spokesperson confirmed in an email to El Paso Times.
Is Bank of America open today?
Bank of America is open normal hours on Friday, Dec. 26, a company spokesperson confirmed in an email to El Paso Times.
