MISHAWAKA — The South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation of a hostage standoff Sunday, Dec. 21, in Mishawaka that resulted in three adults and two juveniles being rescued and the suspect shot by police and treated at a local hospital, according to a press release from South Bend Police.
Mishawaka Police and St. Joseph County Metro SWAT responded to a home on Conner Drive on Sunday for a hostage situation, South Bend Police said.
The Tribune’s newsgathering partner, WNDU-TV, reported that after several hours of negotiations, police said SWAT members entered the home just after 3:30 p.m. to rescue the last adult hostage and take the suspect into custody.
No hostages were injured, South Bend Police said.
WNDU reported that police had not released information regarding the severity of the male suspect’s injuries.
In accordance with the interlocal agreement between the South Bend Police Department, the Mishawaka Police Department and the St. Joseph County Police Department, South Bend is handling the investigation.
When South Bend completes its investigation, the press release said, the results will be presented to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s office for review.
