As expected, the Indianapolis Colts are adding quarterback Phillip Rivers to the game day roster for Sunday’s matchup with Seattle.
And according to Ian Rapoport, Rivers will get the start.
As of Friday, head coach Shane Steichen was noncommittal at that time when it came to naming a starter.
However, this decision doesn’t come as a surprise either. Based on how the week of practices unfolded, the feeling from some of the media members around the team is that it will be Rivers who gets the start.
Steichen also spoke very highly of what he saw from Rivers during the week of practices, saying it was “pretty impressive to watch.”
Helping Rivers acclimate quickly will be his understanding of the Colts’ offense after working with Steichen for several seasons with the Chargers. By all accounts, Rivers has been throwing the ball quite well.
But there are still plenty of questions that remain as well. A few of which include, how quickly can Rivers shake the rust off after not playing for four-plus seasons? Also, how well does he move in the pocket? How quickly can he get into football shape? And then there is taking hits.
Rivers will be up against one of the stingiest defenses in football on Sunday.
Seattle ranks second in points per game allowed, and they’ve generated the third-highest quarterback pressure rate this season.
