Cena, among the greatest WWE superstars of all time, is about to have his last match.
It comes at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event as Cena’s “The Last Time is Now” yearlong farewell tour comes to a close. At 48 years old, Cena, who has transitioned to a successful acting career, is retiring from wrestling.
Cena has done it all in WWE and won it all ever since the West Newbury, Massachusetts, native introduced himself to the world with ruthless aggression in 2002.
He held the title as the face of the company for so long and his greatness spanned generations in the ring and outside it.
From his early days as the Doctor of Thuganomics, the 17 WWE championships, all the main events and famous rivalries, the Five Knuckle Shuffles and Attitude Adjustments, being the ultimate baby face and even shockingly the bad guy for a brief second this year, it was a career that puts him on the WWE Mount Rushmore of best to ever do it.
But what likely is his proudest accomplishment is the countless Make-A-Wish wishes that Cena has granted.
The jean short-wearing Cena has been cheered by headband- and armband-wearing kids chanting “Let’s Go Cena” while at the same time embracing others chanting “Cena Sucks.” All of that will again ring out through the Capital One Arena one final time as he faces Gunther for his final match.
And when it’s over, fans and those in the locker room will pay their respects for all of Cena’s hustle, loyalty and respect he has shown to the business for the past 23 years.
