The week of Nov. 30-Dec. 6 saw a busy slate of girls high school basketball and wrestling featuring teams and athletes from the Des Moines metro area.
The Dan Gable Donnybrook Invitational girls wrestling tournament took place on Dec. 5-6 at Xtream Arena in Coralville. The prestigious tournament featured some talented wrestlers from the metro area.
There were also a number of exciting girls basketball games, highlighted by defending Class 5A state champion Johnston defeating Waukee (87-45) and Edgewood, Wis. (69-48).
There were several outstanding individual performances from area female athletes during the week.
Here are the Des Moines Register’s female Athlete of the Week candidates from the Des Moines metro area for the week of Nov. 30-Dec. 6. DesMoinesRegister.com readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.
Cassidy McCallister, Raccoon River-Northwest
McCallister claimed an individual championship at the Dan Gable Donnybrook Invitational girls wrestling tournament Dec. 6 at the Xtream Arena in Coralville.
McCallister placed first at 105 pounds for Raccoon River-Northwest. She went 5-0 during the tournament and pinned Charles City’s Sophia Calpito in 55 seconds during the finals.
Jenica Lewis, Johnston
Lewis powered the 5A No. 1 Johnston girls basketball team past Edgewood (Wis.) by a 69-48 score on Dec. 6 at Anamosa.
The Notre Dame recruit went for 19 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals, and she had just one turnover. Lewis also tallied 19 points, nine rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks during Johnston’s 87-45 win over Waukee on Dec. 5 at Johnston.
Hannah Schmitz, Norwalk
Schmitz placed first at 100 pounds for the Norwalk girls wrestling team at the Ames Invitational on Dec. 6 at Ames.
Schmitz went 3-0 during the tournament. She pinned her first two opponents and then scored an 18-6 major decision over Perry’s Harper Peterson in the finals.
Macy Meyer, DCG
Meyer had a strong outing for the 4A No. 1 Dallas Center-Grimes girls basketball team during a 56-40 victory over rival Adel-Desoto-Minburn on Dec. 2 at Grimes.
Meyer scored 20 points for the Mustangs. She also contributed four rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Keke Walker, Des Moines Roosevelt
Walker helped the Des Moines Roosevelt girls basketball team go to 2-0 on the season with a 54-47 win at Indianola on Dec. 4.
Walker went for 14 points after making 6 of 12 field goals, including two 3-pointers. She also pulled down seven rebounds and dished out one assist.
