Northern Illinois was struck by yet another snowstorm Saturday night into Sunday morning, with areas near the Wisconsin state line receiving the most accumulation.
But the snow isn’t over yet, according to the National Weather Service. The winter wonderland is expected to continue, with more snow forecast later this week in the Chicagoland area.

Northern Illinois received the brunt of the snow, with cities north of I-80 getting between two and seven inches.

How much snow has Illinois gotten so far this season?
The 2025-2026 winter season has kicked off with an aggressive, early start, with Chicago and Rockford already nearing the snowfall totals of the entire 2024-2025 season, according to the NWS.
The two cities have both already received 17.1 inches of snow so far this season, with more than 15 inches of accumulation occurring in the last nine days alone. This has marked the snowiest 9-day period in Chicago and Rockford since February 2021 and 2018, respectively.
The NWS reported that this is the quickest start to the snowfall season Rockford has seen since the onset of reliable records in 1905.

Central Illinois may see a chance of snow Thursday into Friday morning as temperatures dip back below freezing.
Meanwhile, Chicago will experience snow showers Monday night near Lake Michigan, with a chance of flurries every night this week. The NWS says the next swath of snow is likely to migrate north Tuesday into Wednesday, but with temperatures remaining below 36 degrees every evening, snow is possible.
How cold will it get in Chicago? Another cold blast to hit
Another blast of arctic air will hit Chicago this upcoming weekend, potentially causing below zero wind chills once again (especially overnight). Highs may drop to the single digits and teens, while lows may drop toward zero.
Northeast Illinois has a more than 80% chance of below average temperatures Friday through Tuesday, with the chilliest weather expected Dec. 12-14.
