STEVENS POINT – A transitional housing program located at 1700 Monroe St. has ceased operations, moved out and had an eviction complaint dismissed following a dispute with its landlord.
The complaint, filed by property owner Turn of the Century LLC, which is owned by Kurt Orlikowski, against Monroe House LLC, the nonprofit organization managing the housing program, was dismissed without prejudice Dec. 2 by Portage County Circuit Judge Louis J. Molepske Jr.
An additional request by Orlikowski for a hearing on damages was also dismissed by the judge, according to court records. The dispute between the two parties centered around the property’s monthly rental rate and who was responsible for major building repairs and upgrades, both parties told a Stevens Point Journal reporter in November.
The housing program was first announced in November 2024 and began operating out of the building in March 2025, according to BobbieJoy Amann, Monroe House board president. To prepare the property for clients, the organization asked for volunteers and donations to help clean, repair, and set up rooms and furniture during the intervening months.
An initial “notice of lease termination” was improperly served to the organization in September, Molepske ruled during an October court hearing. A second complaint was filed by Orlikowski in October, which Monroe House LLC agreed to comply with by moving out before Nov. 30, according to Amann.
The LLC and its two remaining clients moved off the property by Nov. 30, Mark Kordus, Monroe House LLC board member, wrote to a Stevens Point Journal reporter in a Dec. 3 text message.
The organization is working with the recently formed housing insecurity coalition Partnering Together Portage County, Kordus said, and furniture items purchased by Monroe House LLC − including mattresses, bed frames, sheets and dressers − are set to be used at a 365-day shelter that received an initial approval Dec. 2 at a special meeting of the Stevens Point Common Council.
The Monroe House LLC board will meet in January to discuss its next steps, Kordus said.
