Manitowoc man charged with abuse after daycare sees child's injuries

MANITOWOC – A 26-year-old Manitowoc man has been charged with child abuse after daycare workers found large bruises on his young child.

Drew P. Hein was arrested Nov. 16 after daycare workers reported large bruises on his 4-year-old child to law enforcement.

According to the criminal complaint, Hein initially told police he didn’t hit the child. However, a witness showed a recording from Hein’s living room, where he kept a security camera, of Hein spanking and hitting the child after the child continuously spit food out of their mouth. Hein then admitted to officers he hit the child, the complaint said.

Hein was released from custody on a $1,000 cash bond. He is expected to appear in court Jan. 12 for an initial appearance.

He has been charged with felony child abuse-intentionally cause harm as a repeater, which is a Class H felony and punishable by up to six years in state prison and up to $10,000 in fines.

Hein is not yet represented by an attorney. His case is being presided over by Judge Anthony Lambrecht and is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Angelina Scarpelli.
