The Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce of Volusia County is hosting a fundraiser to help Jamaica recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.
This year the powerful hurricane’s impact on Jamaica will be on everyone’s mind, said Naomi Gayle, the president of the Caribbean American chamber.
“This year we are focusing on the obvious need, which is in Jamaica, the hurricane,” Gayle said.
The Caribbean American chamber will host its annual fundraiser and scholarship banquet on Dec. 13 at 1270 Doyle Road in Deltona from 7 p.m. to midnight. Music will be provided by DJ TJ, according to an announcement, which noted attire is “semi-formal.”
Caribbean cuisine will be served and vegan meals are available by request.
“It’s a beautiful hall, beautiful dancing floor,” Gayle said.
Guenet Gittens-Roberts, founder and CEO of Caribbean American Passport News Magazine, will be the guest speaker.
Helping Jamaica recover from Hurricane Melissa
Gayle said funds are needed to help the country recover from the devastation wrought by the hurricane.
“There are things like clinics and schools that really need money to help to rebuild,” she said.
She said her family in Jamaica was OK, while other chamber members had families who were “devastated” by the hurricane.
“I do have family in Jamaica, but my family is in a safe part of the country,” she said.
She said the Caribbean American chamber has been shipping items to help people in need.
Donations will help provide hot meals, drinking water and shelter for families as well as medical care, according to the Caribbean chamber’s website.
Caribbean chamber banquet tickets and sponsorships
Tickets for the banquet are $75, and sponsorships are available for businesses.
“Business people can sponsor and we can showcase their businesses there,” Gayle said.
Three levels are available for event sponsorship:
