Washington DT DaRon Payne had an early exit from the Week 10 matchup between the Commanders and the Detroit Lions, and Payne will get more time to think about what he did wrong, too.
The NFL has suspended Payne without pay for one game for punching Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown in Sunday’s 44-22 Detroit win. Payne was immediately ejected from the game after attacking St. Brown following Detroit’s second touchdown of the game.
From the NFL’s press release that announced Payne’s suspension,
During the second quarter, Payne was disqualified for striking Detroit’s Amon-Ra St. Brown, a violation of Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which applies to “any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship,” including “throwing a punch, or a forearm,” and Rule 12, Section 2, Article 14(d), which prohibits “striking, swinging at, or clubbing the head or neck of an opponent with the wrist(s), arm(s), elbow(s), or hand(s).”
Payne can appeal the suspension.
