A two-alarm fire broke out the morning of Thursday, Nov. 6 at a Miami-Dade County home that belongs to Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, according to multiple published reports.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reported that more than 20 agency units responded shortly after 4:30 a.m. to a structure fire at a single-family residence in the 4800 block of Davis Road in Coral Gables. Upon arriving, the crews found two structures on the property fully engulfed in flames.
The call was upgraded to a second-alarm fire because of the need for additional support, fire rescue reported. Because of a partial collapse, firefighters switched to a defensive attack to extinguish the fire. After extinguishing the fire, crews remained on scene to monitor for hot spots.
The home was unoccupied at the time of the fire and there were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation, fire rescue said in a prepared statement. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Victoria Byrd told reporters at the scene that crews arriving at the scene found fire that was “as tall as the trees.”
The Miami Herald reported that the residence is a 5,700-square-foot, 5-bedroom and 3 1/2-bathroom house behind a stone wall near Davis and Ponce de Leon roads, and that it belongs to Spoelstra. The Herald reported that the home sits on a 43,000-square-foot lot and was sold for $6.6 million in 2023.
Spoelstra and the Heat returned to South Florida the morning of Nov. 6 on a chartered flight from Denver, where the team completed a four-game road trip with a 122-112 loss to the Denver Nuggets.
According to the Herald report, the team landed in Miami at 5 a.m., about 25 minutes after firefighters were dispatched to Spoelstra’s home.
The team released a statement later in the day on its social media pages.
“We are grateful to learn that nobody was harmed in the fire at coach Spoelstra’s residence this morning. Our thoughts, prayers and assistance are with Spo and his family during this time,” the statement said.
