Polls have opened across Hornell and the region as voters cast their ballots for Election Day 2025.

Some of the top local offices up for election this year include City of Hornell mayor, the full slate of seats on the Hornell Common Council, county legislature seats in Steuben and Allegany counties and a large number of local races for town supervisor, council, highway superintendent and town clerk.

Several towns in Steuben and Allegany counties will also decide local propositions today.

Voters hit the polls in Steuben, Allegany counties

Voters were steadily hitting polling places Tuesday morning and into the afternoon.

Allegany County, which has a live vote tally, reported just under 4,800 votes cast as of 5:30 p.m. That represents a turnout of about 18% of registered voters. The top turnout percentage was evident in Andover, at 30%. The village features a mayoral race between incumbent Dave Truax, a Republican, and Democrat Tom Davis.

In the Steuben County village of North Hornell, 120 voters had gone to the polls as of 5 p.m.

When do polls close on Election Day in New York?

Polls close at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

How to find your poll site in New York?

The New York State Board of Elections has a tool to locate your polling place on its website. You will need to enter your name, five-digit zip code, date of birth and county of residence. The tool will show you where you must go to vote on Election Day. It also lists early voting sites within your county, but note that the early voting period ended on Sunday.

What do you need to vote in New York?

You do not need identification or a card from the Board of Elections in order to vote on Election Day. Bring your driver’s license with you, however, in case election inspectors need to verify your identification if your signature is not on file or to verify a name change.

What propositions are on the ballot in New York?

Voters in the Steuben County towns of Dansville and Pulteney and the Allegany County towns of Almond and Grove will decide the fates of local propositions on Election Day.

All Southern Tier voters will have the opportunity to vote on a New York State Ballot Proposition regarding an Olympic Sports Complex in Essex County.

The amendment allows skiing and related trail facilities on state forest preserve land in Essex County. The site is 1,039 acres and requires the state to add 2,500 acres of new forest land in Adirondack Park.

A “YES” vote authorizes new ski trails and related facilities in the Adirondack forest preserve.

A “NO” vote does not authorize this use.

Can I vote by mail or by absentee ballot?

The deadline to apply online for an early mail or absentee ballot was Oct. 25. However, registered voters can also request an absentee ballot in person at their county Board of Elections by the end of the business day on Monday, Nov. 3. For more information on requesting a ballot go to https://elections.ny.gov/request-ballot.

Can you drop off absentee ballots at a NY polling place?

Yes. You can bring your completed and sealed absentee ballot to a poll site in your county by 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4. Completed absentee ballots may also be dropped off at your County Board of Elections Office by 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

When are absentee ballots due in NY?

Tuesday, Nov. 4. Mailed ballots must receive a postmark that’s no later than Nov. 4. and the ballot must be received by Wednesday, Nov. 12.

Can I register to vote on Election Day in NY?

No. New York does not offer same-day voter registration on Election Day.
