Alliance-area news in brief for Oct. 26

SEBRING COUNCIL – Sebring Village Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 27 at Village Hall. Among items on the agenda are a proclamation for retiring police chief Ray Harris, and the oaths of office for Joshua Kelm, chief of police; Aaron Peterman, sergeant; Scott Dean, reserve sergeant; Dylan Vesey, Lindsay Fraas and Olivia Mossow, patrol officers; Savannah Perkins, full-time dispatcher; and Alexandria Beeson, part-time dispatcher. A regular council meeting will follow.

CANCER FUNDRAISER – A fundraiser to support the family of Terrence Harris of Alliance is planned from 3 to 10 p.m. Oct. 29 at Texas Roadhouse, 2033 W. State St. in Alliance. Ten percent of diners’ total food purchases during that time period will go to the family during 9-year-old Terrence’s fourth battle against cancer.

HABITAT FUNDRAISER – Alliance Area Habitat for Humanity plans a Night at the Races fundraiser Nov. 8 at Alliance Elks Lodge, 606 Glamorgan St. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $60 apiece, and include raffle entry for a chance to win $2,000, food, access to bets and a cash bar. YWCA HALLOWEEN – Alliance YWCA, 239 E. Market St., plans its Fall Fest from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 29. The event will include a trunk-or-treat, crafts, games, popcorn and face-painting. For more information, contact Program Director Tierney Allen at 330-823-1840, ext. 102. Trunk-or-treat decorators can set up from 4 to 4:45 p.m. Teardown at 7:15 p.m.

MONSTER MASH − Family Monster Mash is planned from 3 to 5 p.m. Oct. 29 at Alliance Commons, 405 S. Linden Ave. Event will include candy and crafts, with dinner to follow, featuring meatball subs, salad, green beans, applesauce and pudding.

MLK AWARD NOMINATIONS – University of Mount Union is seeking nominations for its Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award, which goes to individuals who best embody the values and principles exemplified by King’s life work. Recipients will include a Mount Union student, a university employee and a member of the Alliance community. The awards event will be 11:15 a.m. Jan. 23 during the university’s observance of MLK week. Individuals and organizations may make nominations by submitting a letter detailing their qualifications. Submit nominations by Nov. 1 via the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Award Nominations Form. Contact Shawnta Forester, director of student engagement, with questions.

SQUARE DANCING – Friendly Squares plans its monthly dance from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Nov. 8 at Niles Scope Center, 14 E. State St. in Niles. Howard Williamson will be the caller. The dance theme is veterans. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual. PARENTS CLASS – Family Empowerment Ministries will sponsor Diaper Days Extreme at Faith City, 425 E. Market St. A class for parents of children younger than age 2. Parenting classes will be part of the program, which will provide free diapers for one year, and free pullups for toddlers to those who complete the course. Classes will be 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 18-20. Call Brenda Johnson to register at 330-913-7007. Free childcare is available, and transportation within Alliance city limits.
