The victory marked the second time in three years UW opened the season with a shutout.

The Badgers, who are ranked No. 20 in the USCHO poll, outshot the Lions, 33-22, and received goals from senior Christian Fitzgerald and freshman Grady Deering during the first and second periods, respectively, before sophomore Ryan Botterill capped the night with an empty netter with 14 seconds to go.

Hauser is the first Badger since William Gramme in 2023 and the sixth UW goaltender all-time to post a shutout in his collegiate debut. The others are Jack Berry (2016), Bernd Bruckler (2001), Jim Carey (1992) and Wayne Thomas (1968).

Hauser came to Wisconsin after a winning a record 123 games in the Western Hockey League with Calgary and Wenatchee. He set franchise records with the Calgary HItmen for consecutive shutouts (four) and consecutive minutes without a goal (243).

He is part of an eight-man freshman class that is being counted on to make a major contribution this season. Friday was a strong start on that path.
