License plate frames can help you show off your Brewers pride or school spirit. But there are rules about which ones are legal. To help you avoid a ticket, Public Investigator asked the DMV what’s allowed, and what isn’t.
Here’s what we found:
Can my license plate frame cover the state name or stickers?
No. Decorative frames can’t cover any “readable message,” on your license plate, according to state statutes.
The DMV says the “readable message” includes not just the numbers and letters, but also the state name, registration stickers and any other identifying decals. All of it has to be visible.
Are there size limits or measurements for license plate frames?
No. The only requirement is that all identifying information is visible. If the frame blocks even part of the plate, it’s not legal.
How is the rule enforced?
Law enforcement can pull you over and issue a citation solely for having an obstructed plate.
State law says violations can result in a fine of up to $200.
