Borger certified as Music Friendly Texas Community

Gov. Greg Abbott announced Tuesday, Sept. 30, that Borger has been certified as a Music Friendly Texas Community by the Texas Music Office, joining a statewide network that promotes music-related economic development.

The Music Friendly Texas program, launched in 2016, is the first statewide effort of its kind in the nation. Communities that earn the designation complete a multi-step process that includes hosting public workshops, surveying local music assets, and forming an advisory board to support ongoing growth. The certification signals that Borger is committed to creating a welcoming environment for musicians and music businesses while using live performance as a driver for tourism and local jobs.

“Congratulations to the City of Borger on earning the Music Friendly Texas Certified Community designation,” Abbott said in a statement. “With support from the Texas Music Office, the Texas music industry accounts for more than 196,000 direct and indirect permanent jobs and generates over $31 billion in annual economic activity statewide.”

Borger is now one of only a handful of Texas cities that hold three statewide certifications — Music Friendly, Film Friendly and Tourism Friendly — reflecting its push to expand cultural and economic opportunities. City leaders said the designation will help the Panhandle community attract visitors, create opportunities for local artists, and strengthen its downtown economy.

Local leaders react

State Rep. Caroline Fairly said the recognition highlights Borger’s investment in the arts. “Music is an engine for economic growth, a way to showcase our unique culture, and a bridge that connects people of all ages,” Fairly said.

Mayor Karen Felker said the designation affirms Borger’s long-term vision. “Earning the Music Friendly Texas Certified Community designation is more than a title; it’s a commitment to creating opportunities for local talent, attracting visitors, and strengthening our downtown economy,” Felker said. “Music is a universal language, and by investing in it, we’re investing in the vitality of Borger’s future.”

Nicole Chavez, Borger’s civic, convention and Main Street coordinator, said the recognition provides momentum to the city’s downtown revitalization efforts. “By positioning Borger as a hub for music, we’re not just filling seats; we’re fueling quality of life and creating a destination that strengthens our economy and celebrates our culture,” Chavez said.

Local musician and business owner David Duran added that a stronger music scene benefits both community and commerce. “Giving people in Borger a space to share their music not only builds community, but also creates a culture where people feel valued and inspired,” he said. “A strong local music scene also means more visitors, more small business activity and more opportunities for our youth.”

Certification ceremony

The Music Friendly Texas designation will be officially presented during Borger’s City Council meeting at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 7. Texas Music Office Community Relations and Outreach Specialist Gini Mascorro will join city officials and community leaders for the online ceremony.

Borger is the 89th city in Texas to receive the certification. More information about the Music Friendly Texas program is available at gov.texas.gov/music/page/music-friendly-communities.
