Packers release rookie Brant Banks following tie with Cowboys

The Green Bay Packers released offensive tackle Brant Banks on Tuesday. An undrafted rookie, Banks was signed to the 53-man roster last week to help provide depth for an offensive line dealing with injuries to Zach Tom, Anthony Belton and Aaron Banks. He played two special teams snaps during the Packers’ 40-40 tie with the Dallas Cowboys but was not needed to play along the offensive line.

If he clears waivers, Banks could return to the Packers practice squad as soon as Thursday.

Banks was an elevation from the practice squad for Week 2, so he’s already appeared in two of the Packers’ first four games.

Why the roster move? The Packers have several players eligible to come off the PUP list or injured reserve between now and Week 6, including wide receiver Christian Watson, offensive lineman Jacob Monk, running back MarShawn Lloyd and rookie linebacker Collin Oliver. Releasing Banks now will give the Packers a chance to return him to the practice squad this week and have roster spots available for the return designation decisions coming up.

After releasing Banks, the Packers have two open spots on the 53-man roster.
