Dolphins place rookie CB on injured reserve to make room for kicker

The Miami Dolphins placed rookie cornerback Jason Marshall Jr. on injured reserve to make room for kicker Riley Patterson on the active roster.

Marshall, a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft, competed with and beat out Mike Hilton for starting slot cornerback duties in the Miami secondary. But the rookie struggled in his time on the field in the first three weeks before exiting Week 3 with a hamstring injury. Marshall’s 28.2 grade on PFF ranks last of all NFL cornerbacks.

The Dolphins are set to turn to veteran Cornell Armstrong in the slot in Marshall’s absence.

Marshall will have to miss at least four games before he’s eligible to return from injured reserve. That means the earliest the rookie could return is in Week 8 when the Dolphins face the Atlanta Falcons.

Miami needed an extra spot on the 53-man roster for Patterson after elevating him from the practice squad in each of the first three weeks. Players can’t be moved up and available to play for a fourth time unless they are added to the active roster. With Dolphins kicker Jason Sanders still on injured reserve, the team is sticking with Patterson, who has made both of his field goal attempts and all six of his extra point tries.
