Lain's gears up for fall season. Here's when Canisteo cider mill opens in 2025

There’s a good reason why scores of Southern Tier apple cider lovers circle the last Saturday in September on their calendars each year.

It is because that’s traditionally the opening day for Steuben County’s storied Lain’s Cider Mill.

Lain’s is a fall must visit destination for apples, fresh-pressed cider, delicious baked goods and a customer favorite, cider doughnuts.

Established in 1964, the mill is located at 6226 Lain Road in the town of Canisteo.

The folks at Lain’s are gearing up for a busy autumn, according to mill owner, Harry Lain.

Lain kin have welcomed multiple generations of families to the mill over the decades, while also attracting in new visitors each year.

“A lot of our customers have been coming here for at least 50 years,” said Lain, son of the mill founder E.H. Lain. “I am known all over for my cider mill, and it is only an eight-week (a year) business.”

The wait is almost over! The mill’s 62nd fall season begins in just a few days.

This is when Lain’s Cider Mill opens in 2025

Lain’s Cider Mill opens this year on Saturday, Sept. 27, at 9 a.m. Please, no early birds.

Going forward, it will be open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m., through Nov. 26, the day before Thanksgiving.

Custom pressing will be available beginning early next week, from 1 to 6:30 p.m., on a first come, first served basis.

Apples, cider, baked goods and cider doughnuts draw customers

Lain’s will feature an abundant variety of New York state-grown apples. As the season progresses, as many as two dozen varieties will be available, according to the mill.

Cider continues to be a good draw, Lain said, but so is the large selection of baked goods, including breads, cookies, pies and rolls.

Lain’s began making cider doughnuts around 20 years ago, and they have proved to be one of the venue’s most popular items, Lain said.
