A well-known Madison brewery is closing one of its four locations this fall.
The Great Dane Pub & Brewing Company announced Sept. 15 plans to close its location at the Hilldale Shopping Center, 357 Price Place.
“This was an incredibly difficult decision,” Eliot Butler, the brewery’s founder and president, said in a statement. “Hilldale has been part of our story for 19 years and the community means so much to all of us. We’re forever grateful to the team and the guests who made it special.”
In a news release, The Great Dane cited financial challenges as a result of a shifting “restaurant/retail landscape” as the reason for the closure.
“While difficult, we’ll focus our energy on two things: Helping our Hilldale staff move forward and strengthening our three other Madison-area pubs,” Butler’s statement said.
According to The Great Dane’s website, the business was founded in 1994 and considers itself to be “Madison’s original brewpub.” Besides its Hilldale location, The Great Dane has locations in downtown Madison, Fitchburg and East Madison. The business currently brews beer at its Hilldale, downtown Madison and Fitchburg locations.
The Hilldale location was its largest brewery, the website said.
The brewery’s last day is Nov. 8. The Great Dane plans to continue serving the same menu until then, according to the news release.
Gift cards can be redeemed at the other locations, and The Great Dane’s event staff will work with anyone who had a planned event to accommodate the closure.
