This weekend: 5 free things to do in Ventura County before summer ends

Help clean up a local beach, check out a surf competition or catch an outdoor movie. Here’s what to do in Ventura County this weekend.

1. Catch an outdoor movie

Head to Ojai and watch “Speak” on Sept. 19.

The Ojai Film Society holds an outdoor film series on select Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at the Libbey Bowl, 210 S. Signal St.

Walk-ups are welcome, but RSVPs are encouraged. More information: ojaifilmsociety.org.

2. Clean up a beach

Pick your favorite beach and help clean it up.

Volunteers can choose from a list of local sites in this year’s California Coastal Cleanup Day. From 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 20, they can clean up coastal spots from Rincon, north of Ventura, to Mugu Beach, near the Oxnard Plain. The event also includes inland sites, from Santa Paula Creek at Steckel Park to Calleguas Creek in the Camarillo area.

A full list of local spots, map and more information is available at vccoastcleanup.org.

3. Cheer on surfers

Check out a surf competition at the Ventura Harbor this weekend.

The National Scholastic Surfing Association tournament is scheduled to return to the harbor on Sept. 20-21. The competition is expected to start at 6 a.m. near the South Jetty.

4. Help a native seed farm

Head to the Santa Monica Mountains on Sept. 20 and help plant.

The project is part of restoration work to establish a native seed farm and runs from 9 a.m. to noon at Rancho Sierra Vista. Parking is available by the gate near the Wendy Trailhead. The nearest cross street is Potrero Road and Erinlea Avenue in Newbury Park.

Organizers urged participants to bring water, sunscreen, a hat, closed-toe shoes and wear a long-sleeved shirt. Gloves and tools will be provided.

5. Check out British cars

The annual British Car Club Show returns to the Channel Islands Harbor on Sept. 21.

This year’s theme is “Celebrating the Triumph through the Decades,” organizers said. The event is expected to include scores of classics from vintage MGs to Triumphs.

Spectators can go for free. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Harbor View Park, 3850 Harbor Blvd., and also includes local vendors and live music.
