Indianapolis Colts’ cornerback Charvarius Ward will return to the practice field on Wednesday, said head coach Shane Steichen.
However, he does remain in concussion protocol, which leaves his status for Sunday’s game still up in the air at this time. But returning to practice is a sign that progress is being made.
Ward entered concussion protocol on the Monday after the Colts’ Week 1 win over Miami. He did not practice at all last week and was ruled out of the Colts’ Week 2 game against Denver last Friday.
In his Colts’ regular-season debut, Ward played 44 snaps, allowing five receptions, but he held pass-catchers to just 5.4 yards per catch. Tua Tagovailoa’s passer rating when targeting Ward was 89.2, according to PFF.
Without Ward in the lineup against Denver, Mekhi Blackmon started opposite of Xavien Howard. Blackmon would hold his own, targeted just one time, while not surrendering a reception.
Howard, however, was targeted heavily by Bo Nix, surrendering eight receptions for 78 yards, along with being penalized three times.
Up until the final few drives of the game, it was a very efficient performance for Nix and the Broncos’ passing game. Not helping the Colts’ secondary either was the lack of a steady pass rush.
The Colts’ first official injury report will be released on Wednesday afternoon.
They are on the road this week for the first time this season, taking on the Tennessee Titans in a divisional matchup.
