The Jacksonville Jaguars’ decision to release safety Darnell Savage is the latest move by GM James Gladstone as he continues to overhaul this entire roster.
This has been a year full of change for the Jaguars. That not only refers to bringing in Gladstone as the new GM or Liam Coen as the new head coach, but throughout the roster as well. In fact, of the 53 players on the Jaguars’ initial post-training camp roster, only 29 of them were on the team last season.
In the midst of many new faces being brought in over the offseason, that’s also resulted in Gladstone moving on from many other notable players that former GM Trent Baalke brought in, as noted by ESPN’s Michael DiRocco.
Notable Jaguars players released, cut, or traded this offseason
As Gladstone said during his post-training camp press conference, he didn’t set out this offseason with a certain percentage of roster turnover that he wanted to have take place as part of his transition. What took place was all organic.
A high level of turnover under a new regime certainly isn’t uncommon as the new GM brings in players that better fit the new schemes being implemented and the style of play they are looking for.
There is also something to be said for players who are handpicked by the new GM versus those who are not–that does matter when difficult decisions have to be made.
During his relatively brief tenure as the Jaguars’ GM, Gladstone has shown a willingness to be aggressive when needed. Gladstone’s also been malleable, adjusting on the fly when he sees fit and has continually reshaped the roster–even if that means moving on from previous key contributors.
“We’re becoming the best version of the 2025 Jaguars at the right time,” Gladstone said after roster cutdowns, via Jaguars.com.
