VOTE: Volusia-Flagler Boys Athlete of the Week for Sept. 8-13 presented by Halifax Health

The polls are open!

It’s time to vote for the Halifax Health Volusia-Flagler Boys Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 8-13.

Last week, New Smyrna Beach golfer Jayden Martin captured the honors, claiming 42.4% of the votes. The senior tied teammate Josiah Anderson and Seabreeze’s Sam Garewal with a 2-over-par 35 in a match against the Sandcrabs. Martin followed it with 3-over-par 39 to tie for second in a showdown with Spruce Creek.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal gathers nominees from across the area via email at cvinel@gannett.com. Please send a player’s name, school and notable statistics for a given week. Submissions are due no later than 8 a.m. every Monday.

To round out the ballot, our staff also picks athletes from scores and stats posted online or submitted by local coaches. Athletes for all in-season sports, except football, are eligible. The News-Journal recognizes the local gridiron stars with our weekly game balls story.

Voting in the online poll below will close at 10 a.m. Thursday. Votes are restricted to once per device per hour.

Cross Country

Eldin Rankin, Father Lopez: The sophomore ranked 14th at the Embry-Riddle Cross Country Classic, first among locals, with a time of 20:19.9.

Connor Rivera, University: The freshman recorded the third-best time among Volusia-Flagler competitors at the Hagerty Invitational, placing 56th overall in 18:31.3.

Golf

Chase Ebbert, University: The freshman fired a 9-over-par 45 to lead the Titans to a win over Deltona.

Braxton Fosgate, New Smyrna Beach: The sophomore shot a 3-over-par 39, tying for first in a match against Mainland.

Swimming

Gavin Thomas, DeLand: Thomas picked up wins in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke, turning in times of 52.81 and 55.02 at the Record Breaker meet.
