Notre Dame football entered the 2025 season with even higher expectations than it had the season before.
It’s the cost that comes with finishing as the national runner-up in the College Football Playoff championship game.
Marcus Freeman’s team sustained a setback to those expectations in Week 1 with a 27-24 loss to No. 7 Miami, a loss that has now made margin of error for the Irish slightly smaller than it was to open up the season as an independent.
There were some highlights and positives to take from the Week 1 loss to Miami for Notre Dame, though. After struggling at times in the game, first-year starting quarterback CJ Carr put Notre Dame in a position to win the game with a game-tying rushing touchdown with 3:21 remaining on top of throwing two touchdowns and finishing with more than 200 passing yards.
The Irish now have a week to make any adjustments to their system before entering their longest consecutive game stretch of the season.

Does Notre Dame football play today?
No, Notre Dame is on the first of its two bye weeks of the 2025 college football season. Freeman’s squad will return to action next week when they welcome No. 22 Texas A&M (1-0) to Notre Dame Stadium for an under the lights, primetime top-25 matchup.
Notre Dame took last year’s game against Texas A&M 23-13 down in College Station, Texas. Tied 13-13 with less than two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Jeremiah Love provided Notre Dame with the go-ahead touchdown on a 21-yard carry off the gut and up the middle through Texas A&M’s defense.
The Irish’s game against the Aggies will start a six-game stretch through Saturday, Oct. 18 for Notre Dame. In that stretch, Notre Dame will play five games at home — including the annual USC rivalry game on Oct. 18 — and one road trip in Week 5 on Sept. 27 at Arkansas.
