Every player, despite making it onto an active roster for Week 1 in the NFL, has a weakness. It is what players and coaches look for on film as they get ready for opponents. Now, of course, some players have weaknesses that are more glaring than others, but they always exist.
In an interesting piece to lead into the regular season, PFF’s John Kosko wrote about each starting quarterback’s biggest weakness heading into the 2025 regular season.
The Bucs will trot out former number one overall pick Baker Mayfield for the third year in a row after signing him to a free agent contract that has been a tremendous return on investment for the team. Coming off a career year, Kosko identifies Mayfield’s biggest weakness as moving up in the pocket. He writes, “We’re at a point in Mayfield’s career where it is difficult to pinpoint a specific weakness in his grading profile. While he doesn’t grade as an elite passer, he’s above average to good in several areas. Where he was forced to move up in the pocket in 2024, though, he earned a 44.8 PFF passing grade and failed to make a big-time throw on 61 dropbacks.”
Mayfield has always had a reckless abandon for himself as he looks to make plays, but having the awareness to step up in the pocket would open up the offense. Of course, he loves being able to extend plays and scramble out, but the team has been vocal about him protecting himself more in 2025 in that department.
Baker Mayfield is must-watch TV during the 2025 season. If he can unlock this last feat in his arsenal, look out for him and this Bucs offense to take the next step that not many knew would be possible.
