FOND DU LAC COUNTY – A police chase of nearly 6 miles reached speeds of 130 mph and resulted in the arrest of a Green Bay man and woman Thursday, Aug. 28.
The incident began around 7:42 p.m. Aug. 28 when a Fond du lac County probationary deputy and K-9 handler observed a vehicle pull out in front of another vehicle and nearly cause a crash on Van Dyne Road at Main Street in Van Dyne.
The vehicle also had tinted windows and an obstructed rear license plate, Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The deputies stopped the vehicle and made contact with the two occupants, who initially refused to provide identification. The sheriff’s office reported deputies noticed a strong smell of intoxicants coming from the vehicle. The driver then “rapidly accelerated” away from the deputies, leading to a police chase south on Van Dyne Road, the sheriff’s office said.
The deputies pursued the suspect vehicle with their emergency lights and sirens activated, which the suspect vehicle failed to yield to. The vehicle accelerated to speeds exceeding 130 mph, according to the sheriff’s office.
As the vehicle neared the village of North Fond du Lac on Van Dyne Road, a North Fond du Lac police officer deployed a tire deflation device, deflating two of the tires. The vehicle continued to travel into the village of North Fond du Lac at speeds around 70 mph while proceeding through a stop sign before striking a curb and coming to rest on Prospect Avenue at Garfield Street.
The driver was taken into custody at the vehicle, but the passenger fled on foot.
Deputies, officers and K-9 Iro pursued the passenger suspect in a foot chase. Bystanders assisted in directing the deputies to catch up to the suspect and he was taken into custody without further incident, the sheriff’s office said.
K-9 Kubo was then deployed to conduct an open-air sniff around the vehicle, which yielded a positive K-9 alert. Inside the vehicle, multiple illicit substances and drug paraphernalia were located, according to the sheriff’s office.
The names of those arrested were not immediately released.
The driver, a 24-year-old Green Bay woman, was booked into Fond du Lac County Jail on suspicion of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, fleeing and eluding an officer, resisting and obstructing an officer, possession of a Schedule 1 narcotic, possession of drug paraphernalia and felony bail jumping. The driver had an outstanding warrant for her arrest and an open case.
