Here’s who the Colts released Tuesday
Released
RB Khalil Herbert: Initially signed in the offseason as insurance for Jonathan Taylor, Herbert was beaten out by Tyler Goodson’s explosiveness before suffering a hamstring injury that cost him late in training camp.
CB Duke Shelley: A veteran cornerback signed in the aftermath of a rash of injuries, Shelley had moments in training camp, but the Colts have aggressively upgraded the cornerback position in the last week, making Shelley expendable.WR Laquon Treadwell: Facing a numbers game at wide receiver, Treadwell was a standout throughout training camp and the preseason with seven catches for 140 yards and a touchdown, but the Colts brought back six players with established roles.
DT Josh Tupou: Played most of his career under new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, but he was unable to make an impact and establish himself as a nose tackle backup to Grover Stewart.
DB Chris Lammons: Lammons has played in 18 games over the last two seasons for the Colts, mostly on special teams with the occasional emergency replacement for Kenny Moore II, but he became expendable when Indianapolis traded for Mekhi Blackmon.
TE Sean McKeonWaived (Subject to waiver claim by 12 p.m. Wednesday)
QB Jason Bean: Spent his entire rookie season on the practice squad after surprising the Colts as an undrafted quarterback out of Kansas in 2024, but he fell behind Riley Leonard early in the battle for the No. 3 job and never recovered. Bean, who completed 14 of 24 passes for 144 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the preseason, could be back on the practice squad.
RB Ulysses Bentley IV: Undrafted out of Ole Miss, Bentley led the Colts with 22 carries for 94 yards and two touchdowns in the preseason, and he seems like a likely candidate for the practice squad.
CB JuJu Brents: The team’s most surprising cut, the 2023 second-round pick played in 11 games over two seasons with the Colts, but he was hit hard by injuries, and Indianapolis ultimately decided he did not fit Anarumo’s scheme.
LB Jake Chaney: Brought in to beef up a depleted linebacker unit late in training camp, the undrafted free agent from Wisconsin made two tackles in the preseason.
S Ladarius Tennison: Undrafted free safety from UCF who made just one tackle in the preseason.
OT Marshall Foerner: Big, athletic tackle who played mostly with the third team, and could be a practice squad candidate.
WR Tyler Kahmann: Undrafted free agent from Emporia State who caught two passes for 8 yards in the preseason.
CB Samuel Womack III: Veteran who was claimed off waivers from the 49ers in 2024 and ended up starting eight games, breaking up nine passes and intercepting two more for the Colts. Womack struggled in training camp with penalties, suffered a hamstring injury late and did not appear to be a fit in Anarumo’s system.
RB Nay’Quan Wright: Undrafted running back from South Florida who joined the team late in training camp due to injury, Wright rushed six times for 27 yards in the preseason.
WR Ajou Ajou: A Canadian signee, Ajou has remarkable size and speed, but he caught just four passes for 27 yards in the preseason, as he struggled to turn his tools into production.
DE Isaiah Land: Appeared in 17 games with the Colts over the last two seasons with 7 sacks, 1 sack and 1 tackle for loss. He played 78 snaps on defense last season, 49 on special teams.
DL Durell Nchami: Flashed at times in practice with his quickness as a pass rusher, but faced a loaded group of players ahead of him while making three tackles and one quarterback hit in the preseason.
DL Marcus Haynes: Brought in late because of injury, Haynes made one tackle and recorded a sack against the Bengals in the preseason finale.
WR Landon Parker: Undrafted out of Troy, Parker caught two passes for 12 yards in the preseason.
OT Marcellus Johnson: A potential target for the practice squad, Johnson spent time on the practice squads of the Giants and Vikings during his rookie season after going undrafted out of Missouri.
WR Coleman Owen: Undrafted out of Ohio, Owen led the Colts with 13 catches for 124 yards and a touchdown in the preseason, all while averaging 10.5 yards per return on punts. Owen is a likely practice squad target if he doesn’t get picked up on waivers.
OG Josh Sills: Veteran guard who has spent two seasons in Indianapolis, playing 33 snaps in 2023 before spending most of the 2024 season on the practice squad.
S Trey Washington: Initially made headlines with a hip-drop tackle that ended running back Salvon Ahmed’s season, but the undrafted free agent made 10 tackles in the preseason and could end up on the practice squad.
C Wesley French: Assumed the backup center role in place of an injured Danny Pinter in 2023 and made three starts in place of Ryan Kelly, but he suffered a severe ankle injury that cost him the 2024 season, and he wasn’t able to hold a spot with the second-team offensive line.
LB Austin Ajiake: Developmental linebacker who fought his way into a competition for second team and first-team reps. Ajiake finished second on the team with 13 preseason tackles and made a handful of plays in coverage in the preseason, making him a possible candidate for the practice squad.
TE Jelani Woods: Though not a surprise, it’s notable that the Colts are waiving Woods, a third-round pick in 2022. The former college quarterback flashed his ability as a rookie with a 12.5 yards per catch average and 3 touchdowns on 25 catches. Unfortunately, he missed the past two season due to injuries, and the team could no longer count on him to stay healthy
DB Alex Johnson: Was on the Colts’ practice squad in 2024, made nine tackles and broke up four passes in the preseason. A possible return to the practice squad is uncertain
DT Devonta Davis: Undrafted rookie from Florida Atlantic who recorded three tackles this preseason.
LB Joseph Vaughn: Signed late in training camp to fill in for injuries, the undrafted rookie from UCLA made two tackles in the preseason.
C Mose Vavao: The team’s third-team center for most of training camp, Vavao couldn’t beat out Danny Pinter or Dalton Tucker for an interior spot.
LB Solomon DeShields: Undrafted rookie from Texas A&M, spent the entire summer with the Colts and made six preseason tackles, but he never rose to the second unit in a wide-open linebacker competition.DE Desmond Little: Undrafted rookie from UAB who played mostly with the third and fourth-string units in camp and made three tackles in the preseason.
RB Nate Noel: Undrafted out of Missouri, Noel rushed seven times for 63 yards in the preseason finale.
TE Maximilian Mang: A native of Germany, is expected back on the practice squad as the team’s international player exemption under the NFL’s Player Pathway program.
CB B.J. Mayes: Signed late in training camp, Mayes played mostly with the fourth team, making three tackles and one pass breakup against Cincinnati.
WR Blayne Taylor: Undrafted free agent from Abilene Christian who caught one pass for 12 yards in the preseason.Waived/injuredK Maddux Trujillo: Lost the kicking job early in training camp to Spencer Shrader. Because he was waived/injured, Trujillo will be placed on injured reserve after passing through waivers.
