A 1-year-old child is dead following a house fire in the Town of Chenango.
New York State Police responded at 12:47 p.m. on Aug. 25 to a report of a residential fire on Broad Street.
A 26-year-old woman, who troopers said was a resident at the home, was able to escape with two of her children, a 5-year-old and a 2-year-old. Due to heavy smoke, troopers said, she was unable to bring out her 1-year-old.
Troopers and Broome County Sheriff’s Office deputies went into the house through a window and took the 1-year-old out of the house. The child was transported to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse but died from injuries sustained in the fire.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
