Atkinson Heritage Days and more among 5 things to do this weekend in the Kewanee area

The weekend brings Atkinson Heritage Days and the Illinois State Karting Championship, along with fundraisers, live music and more to the Kewanee area.

What: Enjoy the performance by Keith Rea. The potluck is optional, but it is a great chance to connect with others in the audience. Plates, bowls, silverware, napkins and serving spoons are provided. Bring lawn chairs/blankets and beverage of choice. The family-friendly show is for all ages. The rain location is Bishop Hill Creative Commons.

When: 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22 (optional potluck is at 6 p.m.)

Where: Ca d’Zan House Concerts, Cambridge

Cost: $20-$30 suggested donation to the artist

Atkinson Heritage Days

What: The annual event includes bingo, raffles, produce & floral arrangement judging, Bryner’s chainsaw carving, St. Anthony’s pie and ice cream sale, Vendors in the Park, Rolle Bolle tournament, business window decorating contest, Friday fireworks and paint the park, bags tournament, Hometown Heroes parade at 1 p.m. Saturday, BBQ Rib cook-off and music by Shawn Easton Saturday. Free children’s activities on Saturday include bounce house and inflatable slide, petting zoo, reptiles, face painting, miniature horses, tractor pull, games and more. Cousins Main Lobster will be on site from 1-7 p.m. Saturday.

When: Friday, Aug. 22 and Saturday, Aug. 23

Where: Veterans Park, Atkinson

Live Music

What: Join Virtual Reality and special guest Bailey and the Velvet Sky. Bring a lawn chair. 

When: 7-10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23

Where: Central Bank Pavilion, 218 N. State St., Geneseo

Illinois State Karting Championship

What: Watch the championship in a family-friendly atmosphere. There will be cash payouts and awards in select classes.

When: 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23

Where: Exit 7 Motorsports Park, Colona

Cost: free general admission; $30 for a pit pass; free overnight camping

Conor Mallon

What: Conor Mallon started his musical career with the Armagh Pipers Club where he attended Uilleann Pipe lessons. He progressed through the ranks to become one of the senior teachers at there before touring full time. He was taught by many pipers over the years including Tiarnan O Duinnchinn and Jarlath Henderson. The potluck is optional, but it is a great chance to connect others in the audience. Maple City Fine Arts Exhibit

What: The exhibit will be displayed in the Cellar restaurant and in the gallery through the end of October. Prizes will be awarded for photography, wood, 2-D, jewelry, clay, glass and mixed media.

When: noon Wednesday, Aug. 27 – noon Sunday, Aug. 29

Where: Geneseo Art League and Gallery, 125 N. State St., Geneseo

Sunflowers in Stillness

What: Paint a sunflower vase using a mop brush to create the blended background to make the flowers pop. Tracers are provided so you can jump right into the fun part. All skill levels are welcome. Arrive early for a meal or eat while you paint.

When: 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28

Where: Krans Kafe, 103 S. Bishop Hill St., Bishop Hill

Cost: $35
