Sunflowers at the Auburndale School Forest
Don’t miss your chance to explore the sunflower fields in Auburndale this summer before they are gone. Walk through 2 acres of blooms, stop for photos on the platform or bridge, on the big chair or swing or next to the ’66 GMC truck and tractor at the front of the Auburndale School Forest, 10704 Park Ave. in Auburndale. The field organizer posted on Facebook that they expect “to have great blooms all week.” The field is open to the public free of charge, but donations are accepted to benefit Toys for Tots of North Wood County in the John Deere mailbox on a picnic table on the trail. The event’s Facebook page says sunrise is best viewed at 6 a.m. and sunset is best viewed during the 7:30 p.m. hour, as the field is surrounded by trees.
Mead Kite Festival
Friends of the Mead/McMillan Wildlife Areas will host their third annual Mead Kite Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23 at Mead Wildlife Area, 201517 County Road S in Milladore. The event is free and everyone is invited. Expert fliers from the Wisconsin Kiters Club will fly their kites and perform to music along Highway S and at the visitor center. Participants also are invited to bring their own kites to fly or make their own. There will be a variety of arts and crafts activities, and you can learn about bats and birds too. Food truck vendors will also be on-site. For more information, visit the organization’s Facebook page or the Mead’s website.
