El Paso police identify motorcyclist killed in Alameda Avenue traffic collision

A motorcyclist died when he collided with a car making a turn at the intersection of Alameda Avenue and Delta Drive in the Ascarate area, the El Paso Police Department reported.

Jason Vargas Jr., 26, of East El Paso, died at the scene of the crash, which occurred about 3 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, at the Alameda-Delta intersection, stated a news release issued by Officer Adrian Cisneros, a police spokesman.

Speeding and running a red light on the part of the motorcyclist are suspected of being factors in the collision, police stated.

Vargas was riding a 2005 Honda CBR1100 sports motorcycle heading east on Alameda, police stated. A 2014 Volkswagen Passat driven by Jairo Santoyo, 27, of Central El Paso, was westbound on Alameda when it made a left turn onto Delta.

The motorcycle struck the Passat, and Vargas died at the scene, police said. An investigation by the Special Traffic Investigations Unit continues.

There have been 37 traffic-related deaths in El Paso this year compared with 39 at the same time last year.
