Chargers right guard Mekhi Becton was perhaps the most underrated move of the offseason. It helped shore up the interior part of the team’s offensive line while addressing the need to improve the running game.
Unfortunately, his status for the season opener against the Chargers remains up in the air at the moment. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman addressed Becton’s injury on Tuesday:
“Mekhi’s working through something. He’ll be fine. He’s getting a lot of great meeting time, walkthrough time.”
It’s a bit of a mystery as to what Becton’s injury is, and that may raise some concern from Chargers fans. While Roman added that he does expect Becton to be present for Week 1, he wasn’t ready to put anything in concrete.
Again, that doesn’t exactly sound reassuring for fans in Los Angeles. It doesn’t seem to be a serious issue, though, which should lower some of the overall concern.
The Chargers are already down one of their starters on the offensive line after tackle Rashawn Slater recently suffered a torn patellar tendon that will force him to miss all of 2025. If Becton is unable to go against the Chiefs, Jamaree Salyer would likely step in at right guard.
It’s hard enough to start the season against the reigning AFC champions, Chiefs, let alone when you’re already potentially down two legitimate starters along the offensive line. We’ll wait to hear more from Roman and the coaching staff in the coming weeks, but for now, Chargers fans will have to hold their breaths in regards to a detailed update on Becton.
