DPS: Man dies in crash

A Victoria man died as a result of a two-vehicle crash Friday near Sonora, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety media release.

Another driver was injured in the crash that happened at 11:37 a.m. Friday on U.S. Highway 277 in Sutton County, the DPS said Monday in a media release.

A preliminary DPS investigation indicates a 2017 Dodge Ram pickup was traveling north on U.S. Highway 277 about 4 miles north of Sonora, the DPS said. And a 2023 Peterbilt truck tractor towing a semi-trailer was going south on the highway.

Sonora is about 66 miles south of San Angelo.

The pickup driver, William Edward Ringland, 58, of Victoria, veered out of his lane and crossed the center stripe into the southbound lane, the DPS said.

The driver of the truck tractor, Carlos Martinez Salazar, tried to carry out evasive action by steering his vehicle to the right, but he was unable to avoid colliding with the pickup, the DPS said. The pickup hit the truck tractor in the front.

Ringland was pronounced deceased by Sutton County Justice of the Peace Tammy Liska, the DPS said. Salazar was transported to Lillian M. Hudspeth Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

The Texas Highway Patrol was assisted by the Sutton County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation, the DPS said.
