What's new at the Mu? Unique photo-based exhibit to open

The Massillon Museum’s Studio M will exhibit Greg Martin: Memento Mori from Aug. 16 through Sept. 28.

Memento Moritranslates from Latin as “remember you must die.” The artist says his exhibition is a reflection on the impermanence of life and the transitory nature of mortality and its role in society.

Martin, a Cleveland artist, creates 2D and 3D artwork, combining historic photographic processes (collodion and daguerreotype) with found objects, painting, drawing and sculpture. He explores polarities found in the natural world, industrial history and the digital age. His recent work includes the deliberate (mis)use of simple digital technology to exploit unexpected potential and create unique outputs based on chance.

A Cleveland Institute of Art graduate, Martin has exhibited in duo and group exhibitions, as well as solo exhibitions at Fabrica de Arte Cubano (Havana, Cuba) and SHED Projects and the Cleveland Foundation. Among Martin’s awards and grants, he is a three-time recipient of the Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award.

A free public reception will be held in Studio M for Martin from 5 to 7 p.m. Sept. 20, concurrent with the reception for Lens on Nature: Photographing Stark Parks. A MassMusings podcast interview with Martin will be posted at 12:00 p.m. EST on Friday, September 19, on the MassMu’s website and Spotify.

The Massillon Museum appreciates operating support from the Ohio Arts Council and ArtsinStark, marketing support from Visit Canton, and the support of the citizens of Massillon. This exhibition is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Massillon Museum members may apply to exhibit their artwork in Studio M. New members are welcome any time. Proposals are now being accepted; find “Artist Opportunities” on the Museum’s website.

Exhibitions can be seen during regular MassMu hours, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, and 2 to 5 p.m. Sundays. MassMu is at 121 Lincoln Way East in Massillon. A visit is always free, and everyone is welcome. For more information, call 330-833-4061 or visit massillonmuseum.org.
