No one knows right now if Bronny James, the 20-year-old son of LeBron James, will ever make it as a legitimate NBA rotation player. But there is some legitimate hope that he can eventually get there.
After struggling early last season as a rookie, he started putting up good numbers in the G League. He then had some impressive games during summer league play this month, and he said in a recent interview that he feels more confident than he did months ago.
The elder James and Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry have developed a friendship over the years, and it allowed Curry to get a look at the younger James when the latter was a toddler. Curry recently remarked that he saw something special in the younger James even back then (h/t Lakers Daily).
“I remember how athletic Bronny looked at like, maybe, couldn’t have been more than three or four,” Curry said. “And how fast he ran across the — I’m like, he going somewhere. And now to see him in the league is crazy.”
The younger James, who is listed at 6-foot-3, certainly has some impressive athletic attributes. During the NBA combine in 2024, shortly before the Los Angeles Lakers took him in the second round of the draft, his wingspan was measured at just over 6-foot-7, and his vertical leap was reportedly 40.5 inches.
He may still be a year away from consistent playing time in the NBA, but it is starting to seem like he is on a steady upward trajectory, and all the doubts and criticism surrounding him and the Lakers’ decision to draft him in order to appease his father are starting to subside.
