Kurt Kitayama comes within inches of a 59

Kurt Kitayama rocketed up the 3M Open leaderboard before the final group even got a chance to tee off. He birdied seven of the first nine holes and went 11 under through 16. But the 32-year-old’s quest for 59 hit a snag when his tee shot on the par-3 17th went into a bunker, leading to his first bogey of the day.

Needing an eagle on No. 18 to record the 16th round of 59 in PGA Tour history, Kitayama hit his tee shot on the par-5 18th into the rough (which actually saved it from rolling into the water). He got onto the fairway with his second shot, then nearly spun his approach shot into the hole, missing by inches. He settled for a birdie and the second round of 60 for the tournament (Adam Svensson did so in the first round).

Kitayama ends his day at 17 under and in first place, three strokes ahead of Jesper Svensson and Thorbjørn Olesen, who is set to start his round at 1:40 p.m. He’ll tee off with Jake Knapp, who carded a 59 at the Cognizant Classic at PGA National in West Palm Beach earlier this year.
